Jamaica Birding and Nature | Naturalist Journeys, LLC
Caribbean Island Birdwatching and Butterflies Tour with Guide Narca Moore-Craig
March 31 - April 6, 2012
Jamaica ranks high in biodiversity among the world’s islands, with 26 endemic birds and a host of unique plants, among them more than 60 endemic orchids. The joy of birding and exploring nature here is enhanced even more by its accessibility. Gardens decorate the edges of Jamaica’s wild lands. Soak in the beauty of landscapes of this Caribbean Island, where tropical pleasures compliment our exciting exploration of an exceptional island. Natural Jamaica is found on the eastern, quiet side of the island, away from busy resorts.
We can see a good portion of Jamaica’s signature species, learn about local culture, and still have time to enjoy the camaraderie of our group – and, yes, we can also do some relaxing by the beach or the pool!
Guide Narca Moore-Craig will introduce you to the behavior and ecology of Jamaica’s lush life – its unique birds, beautiful butterflies, and its spectacular flora – including a variety of ferns, orchids (66 endemic species), bromeliads, and other species. She also shares her special insights into the fascinating story of how island biota assembled over the ages – a story of intrigue rivaling that of the Galapagos. With 20 years of leading natural history and birding tours to six continents, Narca is well-suited to this trip: A past president of Western Field Ornithologists, she also conducts research on birds of the New Mexico's Gray Ranch, not far from her home in Portal, AZ. Her award-winning art has appeared in numerous books, including A Natural History of the Sonoran Desert and A Birder's Guide to Southeastern Arizona. More information about Narca, including her blog, is available at www.narcamoorecraig.com.
We stay at two lodges surrounded by nature, Forres Park Lodge, in the Blue Mountains, and the award-winning Hotel Mockingbird Hill, situated in the hills above Port Antonio on the scenic North Coast.
