Undulated Tinamou – PA/TB by far the most common tinamou, heard daily and in several locations

Chachalacas, Guans and Curassows:
Speckled Chachalaca – PA/TB first seen at dawn while waiting for light at the parrot lick, then seen on several days, always vocal!
Andean Guan – seen on grounds of MP and hotel
Spix’s Guan – PA/TB TWC, seen on three days
Blue-throated Piping Guan – PA/TB also first seen as we were leaving the parrot lick site, then seen around TWC and Pousada Amazonas often calling dawn and dusk
Razor-billed Currasow – PA/TB seen flying over the Fish Pond at TWC, a thrill!

Wood-Quails:
Starred Wood Quail – PA/TB heard while hiking several of the area’s trails

Screamers:
Horned Screamer – PA/TB great views and we heard them calling at the Lake near P. Amazonas

Ducks, Geese:
Orinoco Goose – PA/TB Peg spotted the first one of these elegant ducks along the main Tambopata, then we found several more, as we were coming and going between lodges
Muscovy Duck – PA/TB TWC, fish pond, a courting pair, seen mainly in the tree above the dock and flying
Torrent Duck – several pair seen from the train to Machu Picchu, then quite common along Urubamba River
Andean (Speckled) Teal – Cuzco, lake
Yellow-billed Pintail – Cuzco, lake
Puna Teal – Cuzco, lake
Cinnamon Teal – Cuzco, lake
Andean Ruddy Duck – Cuzco, lake

Grebes:
White-tufted Grebe – Cuzco, lake

Cormorants:
Neotropic Cormorant – Cuzco, lake, PA/TB TWC, seen at the Lake

Herons, Egrets, Bitterns:
Cattle Egret – farms along train route; Cuzco farm fields near livestock, flocks in flight over lake area
Cocoi Heron – PA/TB main Tambopata River, several individuals
Fasciated Tiger Heron – spotted by Marcyes at breakfast, then by all when walking to see captive Spectacled Bear
Great Egret – Cuzco, reedy vegetation near lakeshore; PA/TB main Tambopata, spotted first by Renata

Turkey Vulture – PA/TB seen near settled areas
Greater Yellow-headed Vulture – PA/TB seen all but one day, mainly along the river

King Vulture – PA/TB Walter spotted the first of four seen flying over the river on our way to Pousada Amazonas, then at the Fish Pond at TWC we observed one at close range, perched!

Hawks, Eagles, Kites:
Plumbeous Kite – PA/TB TWC above the forest flying
Black-chested Buzzard Eagle – Cuzco, perched for scope views then flying near lakeshore
Roadside Hawk – PA/TB first spotted by Walter on the bus ride from the airport, then seen on four of our five days in the area

Falcons, Caracaras:
Black Caracara – PA/TB several flying, seen from the river
Red-throated Caracara – PA/TB TWC seen fro the Fish Pond trail
Laughing Falcon – PA/TB Heard only, our final morning from the Tower
American Kestrel – seen a couple of times, mainly from the train to MP; Cuzco, back side of lake
Bat Falcon – PA/TB several perched and flying individuals seen while on the main river

Pale-winged Trumpeter – PA/TB TWC, heard at very close range, in terribly dense vegetation walking back from one of our antbird hikes

Wattled Jacana – PA/TB female with small chick hiding in the grass at the Lake

Pale-vented Pigeon – PA/TB best seen in good number at the Lake
Plumbeous Pigeon – PA/TB heard first day, then seen in the scope from the Tower our final morning
Ruddy Pigeon – PA/TB TWC both days
Ruddy Ground Dove – PA/TB seen driving in to the boat landing, near Puerto Maldonada
White-tipped Dove – forest trails along the river at MPPH
Ruddy Quail Dove – PA/TB this haunting note call heard on two days

Macaws, Parrots, Parakeets:
Blue and Yellow Macaw – numerous with just fantastic views at the clay lick, and every day while at TWC
Scarlet Macaw – PA/TB vocal, beautiful and common, seen four of five days
Red and Green Macaw – PA/TB seen every day but less common than the other larger macaws
Chestnut-fronted Macaw – PA/TB close views in trees and on the clay lick at TWC, also flying over the river and from the Tower
Red-bellied Macaw – PA/TB learned by call and then the under wing color, we saw this smaller macaw best from the morning viewing at the clay lick
Blue-headed Macaw – PA/TB seen less often than all other species, but on several days, seen mainly in flight, including three pair from the Tower
White-eyed Parakeet – PA/TB seen two days at TWC
Dusky-headed Parakeet – PA/TB quite common in good sized flocks
Black-capped Parakeet – PA/TB seen from the Tower both times, on our final morning we had a small group perch near the Tower
Mitred Parakeet – noisy flocks screaming above the Urubamba River and grounds of our hotel
Cobalt-winged Parakeet – PA/TB seen on the clay lick and flying about, quite common
White-bellied Parrot – PA/TB not common, but seen in small groups from the clay lick and from the Tower, such a lovely parrot!
Orange-cheeked Parrot – PA/TB seen on the clay, just a few individuals at TWC
Blue-headed Parrot – PA/TB seen very well, perched and flying, two of our five days
Yellow-crowned Parrot – PA/TB seen in small numbers at the clay lick
Mealy Parrot – PA/TB vocal, bold, and common, seen all days

Hoatzin:
Hoatzin – PA/TB the Lake near Pousada Amazonas and Fish Pond, TWC

Cuckoos, Anis:
Greater Ani – PA/TB seen near water areas, excellent views
Smooth-billed Ani – PA/TB seen in grassy areas, transition areas, near settlements

Typical Owls:
Tropical Screech Owl – PA/TB Heard only, early mornings
Tawny-bellied Screech Owl – PA/TB seen well two of our evenings, heard most nights
Crested Owl – PA/TB heard at both locations
Spectacled Owl – PA/TB a real treat to have scope views of this beautiful owl!
Amazonian Pygmy Owl – PA/TB heard three of our days

Potoos:
Great Potoo – PA/TB calling one night at TWC

Nighthawks, Nightjars:
Ladder-tailed Nightjar – PA/TB three different day roosting individuals seen, both on the main river and the Lake. Great photo opportunity
Pauraque – PA/TB seen often in the early morning near the river

Swifts:
White-collared Swift – PA/TB hundreds and hundreds of them one dramatic cloudy day along the main river, seen on two days overall
Pale-rumped Swift – PA/TB seen well at close range final morning at the Tower
White-tipped Swift – seen from railroad tracks high above us near cliff where we got our first view of MP ruins
Lesser Swallow-tailed Swift – PA/TB also seen from the Tower
Andean Swift – calling and flying above us at MP

Hummingbirds:
Rufous-breasted Hermit – PA/TB seen at the Lake our second day
White-bearded Hermit – PA/TB seen off forest trails in large Heleconia
Reddish Hermit – PA/TB fairly common and seen on three of our days
Green Violetear – great to see at feeders of MPPH next to Sparkling Violetear for direct comparison
Chestnut-breasted Coronet – the most common hummingbird at MPPH, lands with wings extended for easy recognition
Green-and-white Hummingbird – MPPH trails and feeders
Gould’s (Collared) Inca – seen by Deb and a few others at MPPH
Sparkling Violetear – common in garden at OY and MPPH and Sacred Valley restaurant; Cuzco, back side of lake in blooming shrubs
Speckled Hummingbird – such a tiny gem, over sized by all others at feeders at MPPH
White-bellied Hummingbird – great views and comparisons with Green and White, OY and MPPH
Fork-tailed Woodnymph – PA/TB one female seen at TWC
Sapphire-spangled Emerald – PA/TB great views of a perched male from one of our canopy level views hiking the second afternoon at TWC
Giant Hummingbird – Cuzco, rocky cliffs at lakeshore
Green-tailed Trainbearer – Cuzco, rocky cliffs at lakeshore
Long-tailed Sylph – hands down a group favorite, great views at MPPH trails and feeders
Booted Racket-tail – feeders and forests of MPPH, one of the group’s favorites
Bearded Mountaineer – great sighting in garden at OY

Trogons, Quetzals:
Blue-crowned Trogon – PA/TB a beautiful trogon but good at hiding, we only heard this lovely bird
Collared Trogon – PA/TB great views of male and female our final morning walking back from the Tower
Masked Trogon – such a beauty - AC
Black-tailed Trogon – PA/TB Seen on two of our days
Violaceous Trogon – PA/TB Walter spotted this above our amazing mixed flock one morning hiking at TWC

Kingfishers:
Ringed Kingfisher – PA/TB Seen on three of our days, this large kingfisher put on quite a show at the Fish Pond at TWC
Amazon Kingfisher – PA/TB Fairly common, we enjoyed seeing a courting pair at the Fish Pond
Green Kingfisher – PA/TB seen by Peg and Caitlin who stopped by the river after our afternoon hike to admire colors of sunset and the near full moon

Motmots:
Rufous Motmot – PA/TB a grand goodbye from Pousada Amazonas was a pair of these perched along the trail at close range
Highland (Blue-crowned) Motmot – Karl spotted this beauty on our hotel grounds at MPPH, most of the group arrived to admire it
Broad-billed Motmot – PA/TB see from two of our overlooks on the afternoon walk at TWC

Jacamars:
White-throated Jacamar – PA/TB we saw a group of eight or more sallying forth for insects from one of our overlooks above the clay lick at TWC. Silverio was pleased and surprised when one appeared at the boat take out point, as it is normally seen in more pristine forest
Blueish-fronted Jacamar – PA/TB we watched a pair of these beauties just above us on the trail we fondly call the second morning Antbird Slog…

Puffbirds:
White-necked Puffbird – PA/TB Peg spotted this large puffbird sitting motionless in the treetops from the Tower our final morning
Chestnut-capped Puffbird – PA/TB a hopelessly CUTE bird, we enjoyed watching it just above our heads on the overlook trail at TWC
Striolated Puffbird – PA/TB a pair seen from the Tower our final morning
Black-fronted Nunbird – PA/TB seen on three of our days, excellent views
White-fronted Nunbird – PA/TB Caitlin spotted this secretive bird from the Tower our first day, where it appeared again our final morning.
Swallow-wing – PA/TB treetops along the river, and one in the dead snag near the dining room at TWC

Barbets:
Gilded Barbet – PA/TB seen on two days, our best view of a pair from the Tower our final morning
Scarlet-hooded Barbet – PA/TB Deb found this tremendously well hidden but great bird in a tree just below our overlook point, the afternoon at TWC

Toucans, Aracaris:
Lettered Aracari – PA/TB Seen when arriving at TWC; we watched them courting and mating while enjoying a well deserved cold beer from the deck!
Curl-crested Aracari – PA/TB a group of seven entertained us from the Tower, wonderful!
White-throated (Cuvier’s) Toucan – PA/TB seen or heard daily

Woodpeckers & Piculets:
Ocellated Piculet – perhaps now labeled cutest bird of the trip, all got great views on the railroad trail
Golden-green Woodpecker – PA/TB a lovely female seen at close range from the Tower our final morning
Golden-olive Woodpecker – a pair making a nest in a prominent tree near reception at MPPH was popular with all
Andean Flicker – seen early on during train ride
Cream-colored Woodpecker – PA/TB seen well at the Fish Pond as we walked around the trial, then again from the Tower our final day
Red-necked Woodpecker – PA/TB seen on two of our days and all got very good looks
Crimson-crested Woodpecker – PA/TB seen from the overlook trail
Red-stained Woodpecker – PA/TB heard only, from the Tower
Olivaceous Woodcreeper – PA/TB this bird led us to a great mixed flock at TWC
Wedge-billed Woodcreeper – PA/TB seen well while on the Antbird Slog
Cinnamon-throated Woodcreeper – PA/TB our first mixed flock on the morning walk at TWC and then seen from the Tower, our final morning
Elegant (Spix’s) Woodcreeper – PA/TB seen in the mixed flock, quite vocal
Buff-throated Woodcreeper – PA/TB our most common woodcreeper, seen or heard four of the days
Red-billed Scythbill – PA/TB this very vocal bird remained hidden from most, but we got glimpses especially in flight

Horneros, Spinetails, Foliage Gleaners, etc:
Pale-legged Hornero – PA/TB seen well at the Fish Pond
Wren-like Rushbird – Cuzco, great views of this bird in the scope, our first stop near the lakeshore
Azara’s Spinetail – MP on Sun Gate trail
Dark-breasted Spinetail – PA/TB a pair seen flying across the opening as we waited at the parrot clay lick for more light
Rusty-fronted Canestero – Cuzco, we worked hard for this bird on the rocky cliff area of the lake, good views
Chestnut-crowned Foliage Gleaner – PA/TB missed flock TWC
Sharp-tailed Streamcreeper – Seen by Deb and Caitlin on railroad trail at AC, a great find!
Chestnut-winged Recurvebill – PA/TB seen by Caitlin and Silverio who were first to reach the top of the Tower our final morning

Typical Antbirds:
Great Antshrike – PA/TB heard only, near the Lake
Plain-winged Antshrike – PA/TB heard on two days along forest trails
Spot-winged Antshrike – PA/TB one of the rewards of our great Antbird Slog, lured in by playback
Dusky-throated Antshrike – PA/TB seen our first day, heard one other day at TWC
Bluish-slate Antshrike – PA/TB also seen at TWC, brought in by playback, Peg endured a fire ant bite until she got the field marks!
Pygmy Antwren – PA/TB seen on the forest edge close to TWC, a favorite of many, so cute!
Ornate Antwren – PA/TB spotted by Deb our final stop of the Antbird Slog
White-flanked Antwren – PA/TB seen on two days
Long-winged Antwren – PA/TB brought in by playback, it stayed a long time giving all great views
Gray Antwren – PA/TB found in one of our mixed flock explosions at TWC
Striated Antbird – PA/TB a bamboo specialist, and that is just where we found it
Black-faced Antbird – PA/TB a reward of our Antbird Slog, again brought in by playback, secretive bird close to the ground, with patience all got good views

Social Flycatcher – PA/TB at one time perched just below the Great Kiskadee for comparison, this bird posed and showed off its inner crown color, which is unusual

Piratic Flycatcher – PA/TB no surprise with so many oropendolas around, one individual from the overlook trail
Streaked Flycatcher – PA/TB seen in beautiful light from the overlook trail, every field mark and its rusty tail noted!
Tropical Kingbird – common throughout; PA/TB our most common flycatcher, seen daily
Masked Tityra – PA/TB seen well from the Tower our final morning

Cotingas:
Screaming Piha – PA/TB seen or heard on two days
Purple-throated Fruitcrow – PA/TB TWC, seen on two days

Manakins:
Dwarf Tyrant Manakin – PA/TB the drabbest of manakins but we were happy to find it
Fiery-capped Manakin – PA/TB Silverio only, from the overlook
Band-tailed Manakin – PA/TB seen on two days of our time at Tambopata, WOW, an intense orange and such a fun bird to see
Round-tailed Manakin – PA/TB a difficult angle just above us on a trail, we finally managed to get good looks

Vireos:
Brown-capped Vireo – railroad trail near AC
Red-eyed Vireo – AC

Jays:
Violaceous Jay – PA/TB seen well from the overlook trail
Purplish Jay – PA/TB noisy and social, we watched them on two of our days

Swallows:
Brown-bellied Swallow – Cuzco, common on the back side of the lake where men were cutting reeds
Barn Swallow – Cuzco, one or two birds, lake area
White-winged Swallow – PA/TB very common along the river
White-banded Swallow – PA/TB also very common along the river
So. Rough-winged Swallow – PA/TB seen from above on the overlook trail
Blue-and-white Swallow – very common throughout mountain areas

Dippers:
White-capped Dipper – several seen from the train, the several of us birding along the river in AC had good views of a pair

Wrens:
Scaly-breasted Wren (So. Nightingale Wren) – PA/TB seen well our first day at Pousada Amazonas
Musician Wren – PA/TB incredible sighting with full surround sound, wow. Peg even got some great photos
Black-capped Donacobius – PA/TB seen in reedy vegetation by the Lake
Gray-breasted Wood Wren (HO) – great background music on many trails
Inca Wren – with some effort we found this in its characteristic bamboo habitat at MP
So. House Wren – MPPH grounds; Cuzco - rocky cliffs area near the lake; PA/TB open area at TWC
Mountain Wren – MPPH grounds, seen well just below the dining room one rainy morning

Thrushes:
Black-billed Thrush – PA/TB first day at the office of Rainforest Expeditions, heard one other day
Lawrence’s Thrush – PA/TB heard on our Antbird Slog
Hauxwell’s Thrush – PA/TB heard from deep in the forest
White-necked Thrush – PA/TB heard early one am at TWC
Andean Solitaire – wonderful views of this normally secretive bird, after a heavy rain in AC along the river

Beryl-spangled Tanager – quick views in mixed flock AC
Blue-and-black Tanager – MPPH grounds, coming in to banana feeders and AC in mixed flock
Blue-and-yellow Tanager – MP seen off Sun Gate trail, also by some at OY
Blue-gray Tanager – common throughout; PA/TB seen on several days, esp. close to Puerto Maldonado
Blue-naped Chlorophonia – AC in mixed flock on railroad trail
Swallow Tanager – PA/TB a male seen from the overlook trail
Magpie Tanager – PA/TB seen on several days, a favorite of Marcyes who lives with magpies in Wyoming
Red-crowned Ant Tanager – PA/TB two individuals seen low in the forest while hiking
