Birds
Eared
Grebe – Solitary bird swimming around Danzante nesting
rock
CA Brown Pelican – Large numbers flying over
Imperial Beach
Brown Booby – A lone bird on nesting rock gave
us a great look
Blue-footed Booby – Danzante nesting rock had
a feeding group
Magnificent Frigatebird – As predicted, they
languidly floated above
Double-crested Cormorant – Baja’s birds
were in alternate plumage
Reddish Egret – A solo individual entertained
us daily @ Danzante
Snowy Egret – A lone bird was chasing of the
resident Gr. Egret
Great Egret – Feeding in Salicornia @ Los Penaquitos
lagoon (LPL)
Gadwall – At least three birds at LPL
American Wigeon – Several mixed in with coots
at LPL
Turkey Vulture – Lots foraging along the roads
Golden Eagle – Seen being harassed by a N.
Harrier & Am. Kestrel Northern Northern Harrier – Seen scattering
birds over Tijuana R. estuary
White-tailed Kite – Hovering along Highway
5 during rush hour
Cooper’s Hawk – One bird perched on a
shrub at the estuary
Sharp-shinned Hawk – A single bird swooped
@ the Danzante doves
Red-tailed Hawk – Resting on pole at estuary
equestrian center
Red-shouldered Hawk – A screamer at Torrey
Pines flew overhead
American Kestrel – Working on harassing a Golden
Eagle
Gambel’s Quail – Flocks at Anza Borrego
were common
California Quail – A couple of birds at the
estuary VC
American Coot – Along side the road at LPL
Killdeer – Flying overhead and calling at Tijuana

American Oystercatcher – A striking individual
at Danzante
Whimbrel – Foraging along channels of Tijuana
R. estuary
Willet – Flyby flocks at the estuary
Ring-billed Gull – Soaring with the Western
Gulls at Torrey Pines
Western Gull – Flying along the coast at Torrey

Yellow-footed Gull – “The” gull
in the Sea of Cortez
Heermann’s Gull – A few post-breeding
lingerers @ Danzante
Elegant Tern – Every morning four would perch
on exposed rocks
Royal Tern – One bird flying south on our Seafari
Rock Dove – Common at the equestrian barns
near the estuary
White-winged Dove – Kept their AM & PM

Mourning Dove – Common bird in varying habitats
Eurasian Collared Dove – Numerous birds sitting
on wires at estuary
Common Ground-Dove – Three individuals mixed
in @ Danzante
Greater Roadrunner – One Danzante bird tried
to eat a WW Dove
W. Screech Owl – Danzante’s crepuscular
always had them calling
Belted Kingfisher – A Dazante solo that ruled
the cliffs
Xantu’s Hummingbird – A gorgeous male
guarded a pink San Miguel
Anna’s Hummingbird – Guarding chuparosa
@ Tijuana R. estuary
Costa’s Hummingbird – A heavily molting
male was @ Tijuana estuary
Gila Woodpecker – Two birds worked the mesquites
@ Danzante
Ladder-backed Woodpecker – A heard only bird
at Danzante
N. Flicker – A solo bird flew across the Danzante
balconies
Gray Flycatcher – Two separate sightings on
Danzante hikes
Black Phoebe – Numerous birds sitting on shrubs
at estuary
Say’s Phoebe – One individual tee-ing
up at the estuary
Ash-throated Flycatcher – The “common”
Danzante flycatcher
Loggerhead Shrike – Seen sporadically on the
drive to Danzante
Western Scrub Jay – Cooperatively perching
atop a shrub in Torrey
American Crow – Foraging on the streets of
Imperial Beach
Common Raven – Alerting us to his presence
by constant croaking
Tree Swallow – Foraging over the Danzante beach
with Violet-green
Violet-green Swallow – As above
Common Bushtit - Foraging flock at the Torrey Pines

Marsh Wren – A very secretive bird in the estuary
Bewick’s Wren – A confused bird was mixed
in with the Bushtits
Rock Wren – A single bird at the mortreros
trail was prospecting
Canyon Wren – A calling bird at the palms in
Hellhole Canyon
Cactus Wren – Not common, but they were @ Danzante
Wrentit – Torrey Pines had numerous calling
birds, no sightings
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher – Great views of the
Danzante birds
Western Bluebird – Numerous birds flycatching
at Rancho Cuyamaca
Cedar Waxwing – A lone bird hovering as it
ate higuera in Tecomaja
Orange-crowned Warbler – A solo immature at
Danzante
Common Yellowthroat – A nice male at the estuary
peeked out
Spotted Towhee – Numerous spotted ground gleaners
@ Torrey Pine
California Towhee – The resident Torrey Pines
VC pair obliged us
Black-throated Sparrow – Small flocks on the
hike to Hellhole
Belding’s Savannah Sparrow – Sitting
up on plants @ Tijuana estuary
White-crowned Sparrow – Perching atop shrubs
and singing!
Hooded Oriole – Brilliant males coveted Danzante’s
birdbath
Brewer’s Blackbird – Resident males at
Palm Canyon were prowling
Lesser Goldfinch – Palm Canyon Resort had bird
bath attractions
House Sparrow – Ubiquitous in Borrego wherever
cars were parked
