Naturalist Journeys has over two decades of experience and is a leader in planning independent travel for birders. Trinidad and Tobago was our first destination; today Belize, Panama, Costa Rica, and Guatemala join the list as some of our most popular independent destinations. In Trinidad, Belize, and Panama we offer popular two- or three-lodge birding packages, using top eco-lodges and talented local guides ― at great value. In Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Ecuador, we can craft a custom adventure just for you. International independent travel includes airport greeting, accommodations, guided outings, a meal plan you select and all transportation.
We offer Independent Birding Ventures (IBV) on a limited basis, based on availability of our staff time. Many are designed by our founder, Peg Abbott, who has spent extensive time in these locations. We always involve a local operator so you have an in-country contact while traveling. IBVs are designed for two or more people, a family, or a group of friends. IBVs are perfect for photographers, or for a group with varied interests. With an IBV, you pick the dates, the length of your stay, and the activity level.
A custom IBV requires significant planning time and coordination with all the elements composing a high-quality birding and nature exploration at the pace you wish to go. Our ability to build a custom IBV in a post-COVID world is dependent on the availability of lodging at some of our small hotels, and the flexibility of our drivers and guides, and the weather. Therefore, we will require a $300 planning fee after an original consultation and price estimate so that we can efficiently start the process, securing your booking as we go. Expect some lodges to need an additional deposit to hold your spaces. If you wish to stay at other locations than the lodges we currently have agreements with, you will need to book that yourself and pay whatever deposit they require but this can be done. Our goal is to streamline the planning and payment for you to let you focus on having an awesome birding vacation.
Please contact our office if you would like to discuss planning an Independent Birding Venture. In the meantime, we suggest that you read the itineraries for our group tours for your desired destination to best understand the birds and activities common to each location.
