Svalbard is a remote Arctic archipelago located between mainland Norway and the North Pole, deep within the Arctic Ocean. The largest island, Spitsbergen, is dominated by dramatic mountain ranges, vast glaciers, and deeply carved fjords. Roughly 60% of the land is covered in ice, with massive tidewater glaciers calving into icy seas. The landscape is stark and treeless, a true High Arctic tundra. In summer, snowmelt reveals a surprising flush of hardy vegetation: mosses, lichens, saxifrages, and Arctic poppies bloom during the brief but intense midnight sun season. Wildlife is the true hallmark of Svalbard. It is one of the best places on Earth to see polar bears in their natural habitat. The surrounding seas support walrus, ringed and bearded seals, and occasional whales such as belugas and minke whales. Towering seabird cliffs host thousands of nesting birds, including little auks, kittiwakes, guillemots, and Arctic terns, creating a dramatic spectacle against the rugged terrain.
