Trip Itinerary
Itineraries are guidelines; variations in itinerary may occur to account for weather, road conditions, closures, etc. and to maximize your experience.
Tues., June 15 Dutch Harbor, Alaska — Embarkation
Welcome to Dutch Harbor. Board the Safari Explorer and settle in before enjoying dinner on board and meeting your expedition team as your journey begins. *Please note that arriving in Dutch Harbor the day before embarkation is strongly recommended due to weather concerns.
Wed., June 16 Unalaska and Dutch Harbor
Remain in Dutch Harbor to explore the heart of the Aleutian Islands. Visit the Church of the Holy Ascension, the oldest standing church building in Alaska, and explore regional history at the Museum of the Aleutians and the Aleutian World War II National Historic Area Visitor Center. Choose a town tour, skiff excursion, or hike for sweeping views. Dutch Harbor is also known as the home harbor of the Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch television show.
Thurs., June 17 Akutan Island
Akutan Island is home to one of Alaska’s most active volcanoes, Mount Akutan, and showcases some of the Aleutians’ most diverse terrain. Hike wildflower-dotted hillsides, explore hidden coves, paddle rocky shorelines, or take a skiff tour to a sea cave and a tiny local town, keeping an eye out of Sea Otters, Bald Eagles, and whales.
Fri., June 18 Captain’s Choice
Today’s destination depends on tides, weather, and shifting channels, making every visit to this region unique. Whether paddling past volcanic cliffs, hiking windswept shores, or exploring by skiff, the scenery and solitude are unforgettable. There will also be incredible opportunities for spotting rare bird species in this area.
Sat., June 19 Unga Island Abandoned Village
Step back in time on Unga Island, where petrified logs and stumps from an ancient sequoia forest line the shore, preserved by volcanic activity millions of years ago. Wander through the island’s abandoned village, where weathered buildings tell stories of life on the edge of the Aleutians. Explore by skiff or kayak and keep watch for whales near the Shumagin Islands.
Sun., June 20 Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve
No lines, no crowds, just wild Alaska. One of the least visited places in the National Park System, Aniakchak is a true geological marvel. Its six-mile-wide, 2500-foot-deep volcanic caldera formed during a massive eruption 3500 years ago. Weather permitting, explore this rarely seen landscape on foot or by skiff and feel the energy of the Ring of Fire beneath your feet.
Mon., June 21 Ugashik National Wildlife Refuge
The Alaska Peninsula Refuge offers a dramatic blend of volcanic peaks, sweeping tundra, and wave battered coastline. When salmon run, Ugashik lakes and streams attract large numbers of brown bears. Explore this unspoiled wilderness by hiking, kayaking, or skiffing through one of Alaska’s most biologically rich regions.
Tues., June 22 Katmai National Park
Enter a landscape shaped by fire and teeming with life. Katmai National Park, established in 1918, is home to the Valley of Ten Thousands Smokes and one of the world’s largest brown bear populations. Explore Kukak Bay or Geographic Harbor by skiff or on foot and witness the power of volcanic terrain alongside salmon-rich rivers that draw bears and Bald Eagles.
Wed., June 23 Kodiak Island
Welcome to Kodiak Island, where volcanic landscapes and pristine waters await. Paddle quiet bays in search of Sea Otters and Bald Eagles or hike forested hillsides. This region is also a critical habitat for marine mammals and one of the most significant seabird nesting areas on the Pacific coast. Each cove reveals more of Kodiak’s wild character. Kodiak Island hosts many opportunities for outdoor activities; you will have the option to kayak, hike, or take skiff tour depending on conditions.
Thurs., June 24 Kenai Fjords National Park
Awaken in a glacial wonderland. Established in 1980, Kenai Fjords National Park protects over 600,000 acres of glacial wilderness. The Harding Icefield feeds dozens of tidewater glaciers, carving deep fjords where ice meets the sea. Cruise past towering cliffs, waterfalls, and ice-choaked inlets and watch for Harbor Seals, both species of puffins, and Sea Otters by kayak or skiff.
Fri., June 25 Seward, Alaska — Disembarkation
After breakfast, disembark the Safari Explorer and transfer to Anchorage for onward travel, concluding your Aleutian adventure.

Ship Information
The Safari Explorer is designed for upscale comfort in the pursuit of adventure.
This high-end SUV of a yacht is nimble, strong, and loving. The Safari Explorer has what mariners call “feet” that take her into wild areas big ships can’t visit. Her performance-built rugged construction means access to faraway regions. But it’s what’s on the inside that makes this vessel the prize of the fleet. And with only 36 guests on board, the feel is decidedly exclusive.
Lovingly called “the Bulldog,” she’s poised, her interior is a pearl, and the general mood is down-to-earth. In the winter, she bops around the islands of Hawaii soaking up the laid-back aloha spirit—weaving through the islands, ready for bow-riding dolphins. In the summer, she follows the Humpbacks north to Alaska, navigating the inside passage and taking in The Great Land. A protective spirit is infused in every part of the ship, and within the crew. She’s made for adventures after all and with them comes inevitable fun and folly.
Onboard Features: Full-beam swim step; kayaks, paddleboards, inflatable skiffs, hiking poles, snorkel gear; on-deck hot tub (not available in Hawaii); fitness equipment and yoga mats; DVD and book library; wine library.

Stephen Grace
Stephen is an award-winning author, natural history educator and conservationist. He has also contributed to documentary films, and his nature photography has been widely published. Over the past two decades, he has introduced groups of travelers to nature and culture in destinations as varied as Uganda, New Zealand and Alaska.
After moving from Colorado to the Oregon coast, Stephen was captivated by the sight of a Tufted Puffin carrying fish back to its burrow, and the first time he heard a Swainson’s Thrush sing, he knew his life would never be the same. He has been studying birds and sharing their beauty with people ever since.
Formative experiences during Stephen’s journey as a naturalist have included tagging along as a teenager with his grandparents in Madera Canyon, where he absorbed their love of Arizona’s sky islands; helping people with different ability levels experience the Yellowstone ecosystem when he lived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming; and sailing aboard a historic schooner to share the wonders of the Salish Sea with students.
Now based in Port Townsend, Washington, Stephen explores the Pacific Northwest by backpacking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, biking, trail running, and skiing. His wide-ranging natural history pursuits include coring trees to count their growth rings, identifying bats by analyzing their biosonar signals, hunting mammoth tusks in Pleistocene bluffs, searching for the elusive Rubber Boa, preserving native prairie, raising awareness about plankton, and leading sea slug safaris.Other trips with Stephen Grace
